Photography by Richard Toronto |
| Opening Reception: December 1st, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. |
Richard’s latest show covers a vast 20 year history that channels the ghost and pays homage to his teacher, the controversial and eccentric artist/writer Richard Sharpe Shaver. Shaver, whose photos and paintings “Rock Book” images have been shown in New York and Chapman University’s Guggenheim Gallery, considered Toronto’s photos "a waste of time." He did, however, instruct his errant student on the process of “universal imagery”-- the way of seeing that transforms ordinary things or patterns into universally recognized images. (For example, a particular arrangement of spots on a wall is transformed into an image of Jesus, or patterns on a tortilla are seen as an image of Mother Mary.) This and Shaver's theory of mirrored repetitions have had a great influence on these works presented in this show. |
